What makes Purelan™ hypoallergenic?

Purelan™ formulation has been developed to minimize its allergenic potential. Carefully controlling the levels of FLA (free lanolin alcohols) in lanolin can reduce skin reactions even among those who are already sensitive to lanolin. Research shows that reducing the FLA content to less than 3%, particularly when detergent residues have been removed from the product, reduces the incidence of positive patch-test reactions among lanolin-sensitive skin patients. With an alcohol fraction of less than 3% in Purelan™, the allergenic potential to lanolin alcohols, which is observed rarely, is reduced to an absolute minimum as per EP (European Pharmacopeia).

Purelan™ does not contain other additives that might cause a reaction, such as preservatives and fragrances.

Additionally, Purelan™ is dermatologically tested. However, anyone with a known lanolin allergy should avoid using lanolin products, including Purelan™.

When should I apply nipple cream?


Use Purelan™ at every feed to relieve soreness, moisturise, and protect your nipples and skin. There is no need to remove the lanolin cream before feeding your baby.

How do you apply the lanolin cream to your nipples?


With clean hands, apply a pea-sized amount of Purelan™ onto your nipple area - the smooth, rich texture of Purelan™ makes it easy to apply. Purelan™ creates a protective layer on the surface of your skin and rehydrates skin from within - relieving soreness while skin heals naturally. There is no need to remove the cream again before feeding.

It's very thick but I found warming up the tube helped get it out. I applied directly to breast pads then to the nipple, rather than using fingers, to help avoid any germ transfer from hands to cracked nipples. You only need a little bit which means the tube lasts ages!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this cream prior to the birth of my daughter. I used it a few times in those first few weeks when your nipples can become ripped to shreds! It worked quite well and relieved the pain a little, however I felt that rubbing breastmilk into the nipple had the same effect and is free!

It was a good cream to try in that size as I received it free. It is quite thick to squeeze out initially but if I rubbed it in my hands to warm it up it was easier to apply. It did provide me with much relief when my nipples were quite sore.

When I ran out of Lansinoh, I used it and felt that it worked great as well. Like Lansinoh, this is safe to use when breastfeeding and you do not have to wipe it off prior to breastfeeding after application. I felt that the Medela cream is thicker in texture compared to Lansinoh and that made it more difficult to squeeze out and apply as it was in a more solid form. For this reason, I still prefer Lansinoh over the Medela Purelan.

It worked quite well, soothed my cracked nipples and was helpful to use when pumping. However I did find it to be very thick and oily, so was hard to remove. But overall good product did the job

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An expensive option [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Luckily for me I didn’t have issues with sore or cracked nipples but early in my breastfeeding journey I used Purelan cream on the advice of a friend. I also received a sample in the Tell Me Baby sample box. I do like that it is safe for baby to feed without washing the cream off, however it did seem as though my babe could taste it and wasn’t a fan! Maybe I was using too much. From what I have heard it is great for healing and soothing cracked nipples but it definitely loses points for cost. I purchased the large tube as that was all that was available at my pharmacy and it was around $20. I later found larger tubs of lanolin (exactly the same product) in a different section for $4-5 so it seems that there’s some price gouging because it’s in the baby section.

The cream is very thick, almost to thick at times and hard to get out of the tube. I put this cream on breast pads and inserted in my bra for relief, worked a treat.

Needs to be applied quite heavily to have a more lasting effect as otherwise it rubs off on nursing pad/bra. Only downside is once the product starts to get cold in the tube it is almost near impossible to squeeze it out. Also makes for a great heel balm when finished breastfeeding.

The medela cream was extremely thick and sticky. I found when applying it it helped to rub it between my fingers first to warm it up to make it easier to apply. It was an ok product however I did find others I preferred more.

It’s a few dollars pricier than lansinoh but to be honest it’s about the same just a slightly yellowish colour. I use it a lot for my nipples and the area around it which tends to be dry. It does the job but due to price point I will probably go back to my old brand.

We received this as part of the pack but on looking up costing definitely is a very expensive option to go with. It did soothe okay however found the stickiness of this product made clothing stick and that irritated the damage.

Once i started breastfeeding i used it for relief but found the consistency to be extreamly thick and tacky, requiring rubbing to put on. As you can imagine, with cracked nipples this was painfull. I would not purchase this product again as I prefer others on offer on the market
